Tailored CTE with ALLVAR Alloy M: Controlled Expansion Alloys

Match CTE to your design with ALLVAR Alloy M - where M stands for Matching.

ALLVAR Alloy M is a new line of controlled expansion alloys that turn the design paradigm on its head, giving you the power to choose the best coefficient of thermal expansion for your system. That’s right – tailored CTE that you specify!

Do not let material CTE limit your design! ALLVAR Alloy M has a fully customizable coefficient of thermal expansion. This property can be tailored between 30 and +8 ppm/°C to optimize the thermal stability.

Whether your design needs +0.5 or -15 ppm/°C, ALLVAR Alloy M is custom-made to match your specified CTE.

ALLVAR Alloy M in action - Controlled Expansion Matched to Your Needs

Each of the lines in this graph represents a different ALLVAR Alloy M. All but one are shrinking as the temperature increases (negative thermal expansion) while one grows slightly with a near zero CTE between ambient temperature and 150°.

With ALLVAR Alloy M, you are the boss. You can choose the target expansion/contraction coefficient. This means you can effectively create the expansion or contraction rate that you need for your specific application. True controlled expansion is in reach. Don’t let thermal mismatch dictate your design. Control CTE like never before with ALLVAR Alloy M.

A graph comparing strain versus temperature for ALLVAR Alloy M is shown. One yellow line is nearly flat around zero strain from 0 to 150 degrees Celcius. The rest display increasing trends downward with a max of -5x 10^-3 AT 150 degrees celcius. An ALLVAR Alloy M logo is next to the lines to signify that they are ALL different ALLVAR Alloy Ms with unique controlled expansion made to match to customer specifications.

CTE Tailoring with ALLVAR Alloy M vs ALLVAR Alloy 30

Both ALLVAR Alloy 30 and ALLVAR Alloy M are exceptionally useful solutions to tough thermal challenges. Either option will come with a Material Test Report with the specific CTE from the delivered batch of material.

ALLVAR Alloy 30 provides a novel component level CTE tunability by harnessing CTE mismatch with other materials to create a combined tailored component-level CTE over the length of the component. While these alloys have been used and tested extensively, have A- and B- basis material properties, they require an extra component to dial in the CTE to a desired value.

ALLVAR Alloy M offers unprecedented CTE tunability. These custom alloys are purpose-made to match your target CTE in one direction with fewer components than ALLVAR Alloy 30. These alloys might be used to match a particular type of glass in an optic or as a low or matched thermal expansion metering rod. ALLVAR Alloy M is a custom solution for the most challenging thermal designs.
